In August 2014 in Central Java there was inflation of 0.45 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.59, lower than in July 2014 which experienced inflation of 0.72 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 113.07 . Of the six SBH cities, all experienced inflation. The SBH city that experienced the highest inflation was Kudus City at 0.58 percent with a CPI of 119.12 followed by Tegal City at 0.57 percent with a CPI of 110.44; Cilacap City at 0.52 percent with a CPI of 116.99; Surakarta City was 0.46 percent with a CPI of 111.94; Purwokerto City was 0.43 percent with a CPI of 113.30 and the lowest was Semarang City at 0.41 percent with a CPI of 113.31.
Inflation occurred mainly due to an increase in prices as indicated by an increase in the index in the education, recreation and sports group of 1.85 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group at 0.70 percent; processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group by 0.34 percent; transport, communications and financial services group at 0.26 percent; health group by 0.17 percent; clothing group by 0.05 percent; and the food ingredients group at 0.02 percent.
Commodities that make the biggest contribution to inflation are electricity rates, academy/university fees, primary school fees, junior high school fees and sand.
Commodities that made the biggest contribution to deflation were shallots, purebred chicken eggs, garlic, vegetables tomatoes and bricks/tela bricks.
Of the six provincial capitals on the island of Java, all cities experienced inflation. The highest inflation occurred in Serang at 1.16 percent followed by Surabaya at 0.50 percent; DKI at 0.49 percent; Bandung and Semarang each amounted to 0.41 percent and the lowest occurred in Yogyakarta at 0.09 percent.
Of the 82 national CPI cities, 66 cities experienced inflation and 16 cities experienced deflation. The five cities that experienced the highest inflation were Tanjung Pandan at 1.98 percent; Sorong 1.92 percent; Padang 1.83 percent; Manokwari 1.82 percent and Tual 1.76 percent. Meanwhile, the five cities that experienced the highest deflation were Ternate at 1.02 percent, followed by Kupang at 0.87 percent; Gorontalo at 0.52 percent; Palangkaraya and Palopo each amounted to 0.36 percent.
The inflation rate for the August 2014 calendar year was 3.65 percent and the "year on year" inflation rate (August 2014 versus August 2013) was 4.36 percent.
